The M.A.L.A. project consists of an annual international exhibition of artists' books produced throughout each year by Brazilian artists during virtual artistic residency. The program is coordinated by Estela Vilela, a resident of São Paulo, and was conceived by Estela and three other artists: Liliana Pardini, resident in São Paulo, Chica Boyriven, resident in Paris and me, Monique Allain, resident in North Salem, NY.
The M.A.L.A., following its nomadic nature, every year makes a trip to a different destination. Thus, it lands on new horizons, establishes exchanges with new interlocutors, promotes the strengthening of dialogue with different cultures and shares the production of books by Brazilian artists.
In October 2024, at the official invitation of the Government of Mexico City, during the XXIV International Book Fair in the Historic Centre of the city and to celebrate the 190 years of international relations between Brazil and Mexico, the M.A.L.A. will be performing at the El Rule Cultural Centre.
We believe in the importance of cultural exchange between countries as a way to share knowledge and worldviews. Dialogue between different societies facilitates international relations and enables the establishment of mutual support.
I will be participating to the exhibition with the series of artist books WALKING specially developed for this project.
