This article aims to examine learning mechanisms and to propose the concept of artistic experience as a creative means of prompting such mechanisms while supporting sustainable development. It investigates the learning mechanisms through Art, rather than in Art. The text draws material from statements made by the ‘Education for Sustainable Development’ roundtable participants, during the C40 São Paulo Climate Summit, in 2011. Below are some initiatives by a number of artists whose productions address social environmental issues; including: Darya von Berner, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Hans Haacke, Frans Krajcberg, Cildo Meireles, Vik Muniz, Eduardo Srur, and Hugo Fortes. The text wraps up with a brief presentation on the poetic Mensageiras (Messengers) project, conceived by the author.
